Showrooms are lit to make tiles look their best: bright, even, cool light. Your bathroom has a small window facing south, warm downlights and a vanity mirror. The same tile can look grey in one and beige in the other.
How light changes a tile
- Natural light shifts through the day. North-facing rooms are warm and bright; south-facing rooms are cooler and flatter.
- Artificial light has a colour temperature. Warm white (around 2700 to 3000K) brings out yellows and creams; cool white (4000K and up) brings out greys and blues.
- Finish matters too. Gloss and polished tiles reflect light and show every lamp; matte tiles look calmer and more even.
How to judge a sample
- Look at samples where they will be installed, on the floor or against the wall.
- Check them in the morning, midday and evening, and with your lights on.
- Look at a larger piece or several tiles together; a single small chip exaggerates contrast.
- Put the tile next to the benchtop, cabinetry and paint colours it will live with.
Why we do it this way
This is the reason we run a mobile selection service instead of asking you to decide in a showroom. We bring a curated range to your home or site, so you choose in the light you will actually live with.
Frequently asked questions
How many samples should I look at?
Three to five options per area is plenty. More than that and it gets harder, not easier, to decide.
Can I keep samples for a few days?
Usually, yes. Ask us when you book; for larger pieces we arrange a pick-up.
